Color Additive Labeling Guide

Here you will find a list of additives that have been approved by FDA (Food & Drug Administration) for use in food, drugs and cosmetics.  The labeling has been broken down so one who is found to be allergic to commonly used materials will know what to avoid by reading the label.

Chemicals, Minerals, Heavy Metals and Colorants are given numbers.

After that they are given letters. These letters are abbreviations for uses this ingredient is approved for.

FD&C (food, drug, and cosmetics)
D&C (drug and cosmetics)
Ext. D&C (external drugs and cosmetics).

This is followed by a color designation, such as blue or red, and by a number. An example of such a name is FD&C Red No. 40.

In some cases “straight” colors are combined with aluminum (“substrates”) or other ingredients that make them NOT water soluble. These are known as “lakes” and are named with the addition of the word lake and the substrate, for example: FD&C Red No. 40 Aluminum Lake. These are preferred for cosmetics and food as their pigment won’t bleed.

FD&C Red #40 Lake is an extremely common ingredient in food, cosmetics and toiletries.
I am allergic to Aluminum. I am also allergic to Carmine (Red dye made from ground Cochineal Beetles).
Both ingredients are used in FD&C Red #40 Lake. It is important for me to know this to avoid serious reactions.

Another example: If you are found to be allergic to Copper, a cosmetic with copper ingredients in it will be irritating, at the very least for you.

Continuous “Re-exposure” to your allergens WILL impede your recovery!

If you are allergic to a specific material – putting it on your skin or eating it will cause reactions.
